What is the origin of the tapas?

The origin of tapas is uncertain. According to legend it arose from the practical need to cover drinks (tapar in Spanish – to cover, hence the name) with a small portion of food to prevent insects or dust from entering, attributed to the monarch Alfonso XIII. Another theory tells us that it was to reduce the effects of alcohol. Whatever their origin, the tapas have evolved and have become an essential way of enjoying the table in Spain.

The tapas not only represent a way of eating, but are also a cultural and social experience, offering a way to enjoy eating in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

What are the tapas?

They are small portions of food usually served with a drink in bars and restaurants. The tapas can vary greatly in terms of ingredients, size, preparation and presentation, which makes them very versatile and suitable for all tastes.

Characteristics of the Tapas

Size: They are small portions, designed to be a kind of appetizer. The idea is that several different tapas can be eaten at the same meal.

Variety: There are countless types of tapas that can include ingredients such as seafood, meats, vegetables, cheeses, sausages, and more.

Sharing: Several tapas are usually ordered to share among friends or family, fostering a social and shared experience.

Accompanied by a drink: Traditionally, tapas are accompanied by a drink, whether it be wine, beer, cider, or even a non-alcoholic beverage.
